The Department of Petroleum and Mining Engineering (PME) offers Bachelor of Science in Petroleum and Mining engineering which is one of the top university-level programs among the engineering universities in Bangladesh. The Department of Petroleum & Mining Engineering has started its academic work in the year 2016 with the objective to produce qualified personnel in the field of Petroleum & Mining Engineering, skilled enough to quantify the resources and to develop those resources for proper exploitation. The program is designed to prepare graduates for the national and international fields of Petroleum and Mining Engineering.
The mission of the Dept of PME is drawn from the vision of MIST. The four-pronged mission of the Dept of PME is as under.
· To provide a comprehensive education in diverse fields of petroleum and mining engineering
· To produce technologically advanced professionals with high moral and ethical values to meet the domestic and global needs in the field of petroleum and mining engineering.
· To provide consultancy, advisory, and testing services to public and private organizations including personal in the areas of petroleum and mining engineering.
· To conduct collaboration and research activities with national and international academia and industry.
Undergraduate level: BSc in PME
Short Courses: Based on the requirements from the students, government establishments and industry. Dynamic short courses of few days are conducted by the department of PME.
The Faculty members of the Petroleum and Mining Engineering Department pursue multidisciplinary knowledge and skills aimed at cultivating comprehensive, technological, socioeconomic, and global understanding. They have a vision for energy secured Bangladesh and are constantly working in this aspect. When they’re not busy pioneering the frontiers of their fields, PME faculty members play a vital role in shaping the MIST’s vibrant campus community. Our teachers aspire to empower students to realize their full potential for serving local and global communities in need of improved conditions. Our faculties also support students very enthusiastically in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
The Dept of PME provides for an intensive learning environment for the students in the form of state of the art classrooms and well-equipped laboratories. While the classrooms provide an opportunity to learn the technical aspect of the subject, the laboratories provide an opportunity for the students to have a “hands-on" experience on technology and thus innovate. The air-conditioned classrooms, projection system, document readers are an ideal place for collaborative learning. Besides the existing Petroleum and Mining Engineering Laboratory and Simulation Laboratory, more facilities for upcoming laboratories are likely to be functional by the end of 2020 and will provide an ideal platform for students to specialize in the field of petroleum and mining engineering.
The Dept of PME facilitates the students to improve their professionalism and communication practices through arranging various conferences and seminars. The department got the honor to arrange a seminar on ‘Energy Scenario and Prospect of Petroleum and Mining Engineering in Bangladesh’ in 2017 where the Hon’ble Minister of State, Nasrul Hamid, MP was the chief guest with many renowned speakers from the govt. and industry. Moreover an intensive and constructive seminar on ‘Sustainable Energy Sectors Development and its Challenges and Energy Security of Bangladesh’ was arranged by the Dept of PME, where the chief guest was Dr. Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, Ph.D., Hon’ble Adviser of Power, Energy and Mineral Resource Affairs. Besides the conferences and seminars, the department also arranges relevant guest lectures from which the most recent being on ‘Potentials for Higher Studies and Research Opportunities in Australia’ where the keynote speakers were Dr. Mofazzal Hossain, Assoc. Prof and Head of Petroleum Engineering Discipline, Curtin University, and his associate Ms. Kavita Ganesh, Regional Recruitment Manager.
Guided by learned Faculty members and Supported by MIST authority, undergraduate students gained many achievements. The talented and self-motivated students always continuously prove their worth by successfully competing and winning various awards.
VIEW ACHIEVEMENTS
Dept of PME always encourages and gives support to the students to take part in different activities through which they can nurture there social, leadership, and managerial skills. Dept of PME is not only focused on academic development but also on the development of communication and leadership skills of its students. Our students promptly take part in cultural competitions, debate competitions, leadership development programs, etc. and have certainly proved their capabilities in the above activities. Our students have represented MIST on prestigious national and international platforms such as Hult Prize, Pioneros, Young Social Entrepreneur by SIF, World Asian Case Competition, Asian English Olympic, and so on. Their papers have received awards on an international scale and they have proven their worth by securing the champion position is esteemed competitions. During each of the events, they have received the support and all the necessary technical help from PME Dept. Here they will surely get enough opportunities to test and develop their skills through various extracurricular activities.
Our students excel in various contests and have certainly made their mark on both national and international arena with over 16 prizes (in 2019 alone) and have over the years participated in MARS and the European rover challenge, ICPC, NCPC and various IUPCs, Hackathons and contests. The department, through its computer club, grooms the students with weekly classes.
We also proudly hosted the 1st MIST Inter University Programming Contest (IUPC) on Febuary 2019 with an overwhelming response of 120 teams from 55 nationwide Universities nationwide. With the success of IUPC, MIST also got the honor of hosting the NCPC 2020 on 22 February 2020.
